What happens after installation has a big effect on how the film looks and how long it lasts. Qatar’s sun, fine sand and coastal humidity all put the surface under pressure, and the right care is what keeps the film clear and glossy for years.

This guide covers what to do in the first days, how to wash the car, what to avoid, and when to go back to your installer.

The first days after installation

PPF is installed with a slip solution that lets the installer position it, and that moisture needs time to dry out from under the film. During this period:

Don’t wash the car straight away. XPEL’s official care guidance says to wait 48 hours after installing Ultimate Plus and Stealth, and 72 hours for COLOR PPF. For other brands, follow your installer’s instructions.

If you notice trapped moisture or light haze under the film in the first days, don’t press on it or try to push it out. Ask your technician whether it will clear as the film dries or needs a check.

Leave the edges alone. Don’t pick at them or rub them hard with a cloth.

If an edge starts to lift, go back to the installer rather than trying to fix it yourself.

How to wash a car with PPF

A careful hand wash is the best option. These steps help prevent fine scratches:

Rinse first to remove sand and dust before anything touches the surface. Fine sand is one of the most common causes of wash scratches.

Use a pH-neutral car shampoo. Avoid household cleaners and dish soap.

Use the two-bucket method: one bucket of soapy water, one for rinsing the wash mitt, so you don’t put dirt back on the car.

Use a clean microfibre mitt and light, straight passes from top to bottom.

Dry with a soft microfibre towel, and don’t let water dry on the car in the sun, as minerals leave spots.

Wash in the shade, early in the morning or in the evening. A hot panel dries shampoo too fast and leaves marks.

Pressure washers and automatic car washes

You can use a pressure washer with care: keep the nozzle at a good distance and don’t aim it at the film’s edges. XPEL itself warns that high-pressure water near the edges can lift or damage them.

Brush-type automatic car washes are best avoided, as the brushes can leave fine scratches. XPEL specifically says not to put cars with COLOR PPF through automatic tunnel washes.

What damages the film

Bird droppings, bug splatter and tree sap: remove them as soon as you can. Left to bake in the sun, they stick and can leave a mark.

Unapproved solvents and abrasives: such as petrol, harsh tar removers and abrasive cleaners. XPEL asks owners not to use unapproved solvents, chemicals or abrasives on the film.

Cutting compounds: don’t machine-polish the film with compound without checking with your installer.

Scraping with hard tools: to remove a sticker or residue, use a microfibre cloth and a suitable cleaner only.

Daily parking in direct sun: the film is built to cope, but shade or a car shade reduces the stress on it and on the paint.

Light scratches and self-healing

Many modern films have a self-healing top coat. According to XPEL, light scratches in Ultimate Plus and Stealth heal in 20 to 30 minutes at room temperature, and warm water poured over the area speeds this up. Self-healing works on light scratches in the top coat only; it won’t repair deep cuts or impacts that go through the film. Ask your installer for the specifications of the film on your car.

Should you add ceramic coating over PPF?

It’s a popular choice. A ceramic layer on top makes the surface shed water and dust more easily, so washing is quicker. XPEL recommends sealing Ultimate Plus with Ceramic Boost at least once every 6 months to keep its gloss. Whatever you use, make sure it is compatible with the film.
