A door ding in a car park, a stone, or a dent you can’t explain. The first question is usually: does this need bodywork and a respray, or can it be fixed without paint? Paintless dent repair (PDR) solves many of these cases, but it isn’t right for every dent.
This guide explains when PDR works, when it doesn’t, and how to get a good idea before you visit a workshop.
What is paintless dent repair?
PDR is a way of fixing dents without repainting. The technician uses specialist tools to reach behind the damaged panel or pull it from the outside, then gradually works the metal back to its original shape.
The main advantage is that the original factory paint stays as it is: no filler, no respray and no mismatched colour.
When PDR usually works
- The paint is intact: no cracks or chips at the dent.
- Car park door dings and small to medium dents.
- Round, shallow dents without a sharp fold in the metal.
- Hail damage spread across the roof and bonnet.
- Access: the technician can reach behind the panel or work it from the outside.
When it may not work
- Cracked or chipped paint: the paint is already damaged, so the repair needs refinishing.
- Sharp creases or deep folds in the metal, especially long ones.
- Dents on a panel edge or in places that are hard to reach.
- Large or structural damage from a collision.
- Some aluminium panels are harder to work, and it depends on the case.
- Panels repaired before with filler and paint: results depend on the previous repair and need a hands-on assessment.
In some cases PDR reduces the damage so the area only needs a small touch-up instead of a full panel respray. That’s decided after inspection.
How to assess a dent before your visit
- Look closely at the paint: any cracks, chips or scratches down to metal?
- Check the shape: is it round and soft, or does it have a sharp line?
- Note the location: the middle of a panel is usually easier than an edge.
- Photograph it properly: shoot from several angles with a light reflection or straight lines across the dent, which shows its depth and shape.
Why keeping the factory paint matters
- Resale value: buyers prefer cars with original paint.
- Colour match: no risk of a resprayed panel looking slightly different.
- Time: there’s no waiting for paint to cure.
After the repair
If your car has paint protection film or you’re planning to fit it, fix dents first, because the film covers the surface as it is. Learn more about paint protection film and our PPF care guide.

FAQ
Does PDR work on every dent?
No. It usually works when the paint is intact, the dent has no sharp crease and the area can be reached. Other cases need an assessment.
Will the repair be visible?
In suitable cases the result is very close to the original shape. It depends on the dent’s shape, location and the condition of the metal.
Can you tell from a photo whether a dent can be fixed?
Clear photos and video give a good idea in most cases; the final confirmation comes after inspecting the car.
Does PDR affect the paint?
When the paint is intact, the work is done on the metal without filler or respray, so the factory finish stays as it is.
